Work Eligibility for International Students
International students can work in Canada without needing an employer-specific work permit if they meet the following criteria:
Have a valid study permit
Are enrolled full-time at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Are studying in a program that is at least six months long and leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate
Part-Time and Full-Time Work Options
- During academic semesters: Up to 24 hours per week
- During scheduled breaks (e.g., summer holidays): Full-time work permitted
Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)
Graduates from eligible DLIs can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), allowing them to work in Canada for up to three years. These are open work permits, meaning they can work for any employer without additional paperwork.To be eligible, students must provide:
A valid PGWP OR proof of application submission
Confirmation of program completion
A Social Insurance Number (SIN)
PGWP holders offer a qualified and experienced talent pool that’s already familiar with the Canadian workforce.
Hiring for Co-op or Internships
Employers looking for short-term talent can hire international students through co-op placements or internships.Eligibility for a Co-op/Intern Work Permit:
The student has a valid study permit
The work is required to complete their study program
Their school provides an official letter confirming the work placement requirement
The work placement accounts for 50% or less of the total study program
